This page sets out who we are as a business, how we are licensed and insured, how we are paid, and what commercial relationships might reasonably influence what we publish. We publish it because a homeowner deciding whom to trust with $150,000 deserves to know exactly who they are dealing with.

We provide current certificates for all of the above before any contract is signed. If a contractor will not, that tells you something.

3. How we make money

We are paid by our clients, and only by our clients, for design and construction work. Our fee structure is a fixed contract price that includes labour, materials, subcontractors, project management and overhead. There is no hidden markup on top of the signed price.

We do not charge referral fees to homeowners, we do not receive payment for recommending a client to another trade, and no third party pays us to appear on this website.

4. Supplier relationships

We buy materials from a number of Vancouver Island and mainland suppliers, and like most contractors we receive trade pricing and, on some product lines, volume rebates. Two commitments follow from that:

• Where a quotation includes materials, the price you see is the price we charge, and any rebate we receive is reflected in our pricing rather than taken as an additional margin on your job.
• We are not a dealer, franchisee or exclusive installer for any manufacturer. When we recommend a product, it is because it performs in this climate — and we will happily install a competing product you prefer.

5. Editorial independence

Everything in our renovation journal is written by our own staff and named accordingly. We accept no sponsored posts, no paid guest articles and no affiliate commissions. There are no advertising trackers on this site and no advertiser has any influence over what we publish.

Where a guide names a product or brand, it is because we use it or have tested it. We receive nothing for the mention. Where we criticise a material or method, no competitor has paid for that opinion either.

6. Subcontractors

Carpentry, project management and design are performed by our employees. Electrical, plumbing, gas, HVAC, drywall, tile, painting, roofing and engineering are performed by licensed subcontractors, most of whom have worked with us for more than five years. All carry their own liability insurance and WorkSafeBC coverage, verified annually. We remain contractually responsible to you for their work.

7. Complaints

If something goes wrong, tell the project manager first — most issues are resolved on site within a day. If that does not resolve it, write to Marcus Feld at [email protected]. We acknowledge written complaints within two business days and give a substantive response within ten.

Unresolved disputes may be referred to mediation in Victoria, BC before either party commences proceedings. You also retain any rights you have under the Business Practices and Consumer Protection Act and may contact Consumer Protection BC.

8. Community and environmental practice

• Construction waste is sorted on site; wood, metal, drywall and cardboard are diverted from landfill wherever a facility accepts them.
• Salvageable cabinetry, fixtures and doors are offered to Habitat for Humanity Victoria ReStore before disposal.
• We contribute annually to a local housing charity. We do not publicise the amount, and we do not treat it as a marketing activity.
